They are popping up everywhere, half the celebrities you follow are wearing one, and you can buy them from a whole host of places online.

But here is the thing. The lights and the technology inside these devices can drastically vary… and it is the difference between investing several hundred dollars in a mask that actually supports your skin at a cellular level, or strapping a set of very pretty Christmas lights to your face.

What separates a good mask from a waste of money

There are hundreds of masks out there, and honestly… most of them are rubbish. Here are the three things to look for before you buy.

ONE

It needs more than one type of light.

A proper mask has both red light and near-infrared, not just one colour. Red works on the surface of your skin, while near-infrared travels deeper. If the box only mentions one… put it back.

TWO

Look for the actual numbers.

A quality mask tells you its exact wavelengths, around 630 nanometres for red and 830 to 850 for near-infrared, and how powerful its bulbs are. If a brand will not publish the numbers, it is usually because they are not worth publishing.

THREE

You should be in control.

A good mask gives you a proper treatment timer and real control over your session… not just an on-off switch and a guess.
